چکیده
Roaming across different heterogeneous technologies such as 802.11, WiMAX and UMTS will become a requirement of future networking devices, especially for Voice over IP traffic, which nowadays is one of the most important services regarding the performance evaluation of wireline and wireless networks. In this paper we perform a study on the performance of voice packet transmissions during vertical handovers between 3GHSPA, WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) and WLAN (IEEE 802.11) wireless networks. In particular, we analyze the performance metrics, such as handover latency and packet loss, for obtaining the effects of vertical handover on the mobile node performance, by using the recommended parameter values for link triggers and router configuration in IEEE 802.21 standard. Results show that the handover latency is severely impacted by the choice of the time interval parameters on the link layer, especially in the case of UMTS to WiMAX vertical handover. Packet loss is also analyzed in order to have the best optimization in vertical handovers between UMTS, WiMAX and WLAN, for Voice over IP traffic.

Proactive Handover Decision for Mobile IP based on Link Layer Information
Mobile IP provides mobility support in heterogeneous wireless networks where mobile nodes change the point of attachment. The mobility is handled within the network layer and depends on either receiving router advertisements or sending solicitations. However, this movement detection is not appropriate to provide lossless connectivity during handovers. This paper presents a so-called proactive h...
متن کاملA Distributed Signaling Fast Mobile IPv6 Scheme for Next Generation Heterogeneous IP Networks
The Next-Generation Wireless Networks (NGWNs) are believed to exhibit a heterogeneous environment which imposes various challenges, among them Mobility Management is most crucial. The FMIPv6 protocol has been standardized by IETF to address certain shortcomings of the baseline Mobile IPv6. However, it does not directly support vertical handovers. Therefore, research is still going on to develop...

متن کاملAir interface switching and performance analysis for fast vertical handoff in cellular network and WLAN interworking
The integration of wireless local area network (WLAN) hotspot and the 3G cellular networks is imminently the future mode of public access networks. One of the key elements for the successful integration is vertical handoff between the two heterogeneous networks. Service disruption may occur during the vertical handoff because of the IP layer handoff activities, such as registration, binding upd...
متن کاملTransferring Header Compression Context in Mobile IP Networks
Header compression (HC) is a useful technique for reducing the load on bandwidth-scarce wireless links. HC normally depends on the establishment and synchronisation of context at the compressor and de-compressor. In Mobile IP networks, it is desirable to transfer this context between access routers to avoid the expensive process of context reestablishment. In this paper we propose a method for ...
